CMS is temporarily holding claims from providers in anticipation of legislation that will extend the suspension of the 2 percent Medicare sequester.

The Med Learn Network Connects newsletter from March 30 stated that CMS has “instructed the Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) to hold all claims with dates of service on or after April 1, 2021, for a short period without affecting providers’ cash flow.”

“This will minimize the volume of claims the MACs must reprocess if Congress extends the suspension; the MACs will automatically reprocess any claims paid with the reduction applied if necessary,” continued the newsletter.

Last week, the Senate passed a bill 90 to 2 that would eliminate the 2 percent sequestration of Medicare reimbursements through the end of 2021.

Medicare sequestration (2% reduction of Medicare payment) has been in place since 2013 to reduce Medicare program spending growth, but was suspended due to COVID.

Please note that there is nothing you need to do at this time.  They will begin processing the claims at the end of this temporary hold.  If you find your claims are not getting processed and you are a member of the Network, please get in touch with Sam.
