Does chiropractic care lower healthcare costs among multiply-comorbid Medicare beneficiaries with chronic low back pain?

A study of Medicare fee-for-service reimbursements reviewed over 70,000 multiply-comorbid patients age 66 and older with chronic low back pain episodes using chiropractic manipulative treatment alone, chiropractic manipulative treatment followed or preceded by conventional medical care, or conventional medical care alone.

Medicare reimbursements during the chronic low back pain treatment episode were lowest for patients who used chiropractic manipulative treatment alone.

This study’s findings support initial chiropractic manipulative treatment use in the treatment of, and possibly broader chiropractic management of, older multiply-comorbid chronic low back pain patients.
