2017-2018 Digital Coding Updates

With time there are always changes, additions and updates and the following items have been recently updated in the digital coding library.

Specifically in the Insurance Coverage Guidelines section

 

Aetna has updated it diagnosis list for allowed codes for acupuncture as well as added more references in the acupuncture clinical policy bulletin 0135. Of special note is the addition of headache, no longer migraine only as well as neck pain to the allowed list. There is also updates to the codes for TMJ and post procedural states (pain). There is also new guidelines and specific documentation requirements for medical necessity.

Cigna also updated their Acupuncture Coverage Guideline 0024 to reference the multiple changes and updates to cervical disc coding. Of special note for those who have never referenced this document it lists some 200+ codes for acupuncture reimbursement. There are also multiple updates to references as well.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield Evicore who manages medical necessity for claims published and extensive list if diagnosis codes as well as protocols for acupuncture for each. Of particular merit in this document is pages 270-271 which highlights the allowed diagnoses for acupuncture reimbursement. There is also details to cross reference the traditional medicine diagnosis with the western ICD10.

In the superbill section there is an update to the superbill that contains the diagnosis codes that were new for 2017 such as disc, TMJ, jaw et al

Bear in mind that diagnosis codes will also update again in October of this year. Those will be added in September and can be searched using following search parameter “10-1-2017” which will bring up the codes that are new, changed or deleted on October 1, 2017
